Powers Repeats as Charles Melanson Unsung Hero

BOSTON – For the second straight year, Cameron Powers of the Suffolk men's basketball team has been honored as Suffolk Athletics' Charles Melanson Unsung Hero, Director of Athletics Cary McConnell announced Wednesday afternoon.  

Given annually in honor of the late Charles Melanson, who volunteered countless hours to the Suffolk Athletic Department as a team manager, the award is presented to a student-athlete whose contributions to Suffolk Athletics exemplifies the attributes of an unsung hero; a selfless individual, who is often uncredited. 

Powers if the first student-athlete to take home the honor twice according to the Rams' record books, which date through 2008-09. He is the second student-athlete under Jeff Juron's guidance to earn the distinction following Adam Chick, who garnered the department's unsung hero title in 2015-16.  

"Cam won this award a year ago and he is equally if not more deserving as a senior," Suffolk Assistant Athletic Director, men's basketball head coach Juron said. "He is as selfless and hardworking as any player we've ever had in our program."  

A fixture around Ridgeway, the Middlefield, Connecticut, local was always found with a smile and positive attitude. He carried that persona with him around Suffolk's campus community, as well as the hardwood, whether in the lineup or cheering his teammates on from the sidelines.  

During his time a Suffolk men's basketball jersey he has helped the program to rising success, including the 2018-19 campaign, which saw the Rams put together the most victories (18-9) since 1975-76.  

Individually, the guard, who served as captain as a senior, appeared in 84 games, 43 of which were victories, over four seasons. He amassed 250 points, nearly 100 rebounds, 50 assists and 30 steals.   

With his collegiate playing days wrapped up, Powers will earn his marketing degree from Suffolk's College of Arts and Sciences this May.
