Jacques Named Carol Maggio Departmental Recognition Award Recipient

BOSTON – Suffolk softball's Samantha Jacques has been tabbed the 2019-20 recipient of the Carol Maggio Departmental Recognition Award, Director of Athletics Cary McConnell announced Tuesday afternoon.

The award, which has been handed out for over 20 years, was named in honor of Carol Maggio in 2011-12, the department's longtime Administrative Assistant who served the Rams for over 18 years and is given to a person who has been a valuable asset in the day-to-day operations of the Suffolk Athletic Department.

Jacques is the fifth softball student-athlete to take home the recognition since 2008-09 joining Delaney Sylvester '18, Lindsay Pagano '17, Meredith Ball '16 and Karina Bolster '12.

Jacques has made the most of her time on Beacon Hill and has been a valuable asset to the department since her arrival in 2015.

"Whenever there was a project that needed to be done in the athletics department Samantha was anyone's go-to ask," Sports Information Director Amy Barry said. "Her work ethic is second to none, but it's her desire to take the skills she has learned at Suffolk, whether on the field, in the classroom, or around Ridgeway that makes her standout from the rest."

These transferrable skills at Suffolk have transformed into experiential learning opportunities this year.

In the fall, she interned in Harvard University's marketing department, where she helped develop and implement plans to bring the best game-day experience to the Crimson community. She also aided in community relations and sponsorships during her time across the river.

Jacques resume got another boost in February when she was named the Marketing and Multimedia Specialist for the Great Northeast Athletic Department (GNAC). During her time with the conference office, she spearheaded graphic design efforts for its social media platforms, including the league's NCAA Division III Week effort April 13-19.

The Manchester, New Hampshire, native took on these new responsibilities while carrying a full course load, maintaining a 3.751 grade point average and captaining the Suffolk softball team.

"Sam has grown into a great leader on and off the field," Jaclyn Davis, Suffolk's Associate Director of Athletics and head softball coach said. "The time, effort and support that she provides within the Athletic Department has been invaluable. We could not have been more proud to have her represent Suffolk in the conference office this spring, and we are looking forward to her continuing that in her post-graduate ventures."

On the field, Jacques has filled any role that was needed and earned her place as an everyday starting in right field as a junior. Throughout her career, Jacques appeared in 68 games, amassed 22 hits, brought in nine runs and scored 19 herself.
