Revamped Ridgeway: Suffolk Athletics Headquarters to Undergo Renovations this Summer

BOSTON – Suffolk University Athletics will have a new look come next fall following enhancements and upgrades to the Ridgeway Building funded through a lead gift from brothers Michael S. Smith, BSBA '61, and Larry E. Smith, BSBA '65.

The Ridgway Building, located at 148 Cambridge Street, is the home of the Suffolk University Athletics Department offices, Rams athletic training facilities, and the men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs.

The first phase of renovations, scheduled to begin May 11, will consist of complete demolition of the Ridgeway Building's interior second and third floors.

Restructuring of building space will begin later this summer when demolition is complete, creating areas dedicated to housing the athletic training unit and providing state-of-the-art facilities to serve student-athletes' medical, nutritional and rehabilitation needs. There also will be new, state-of-the-art locker rooms for the Rams and visiting teams, a multimedia room, a student lounge and updated offices.

The newly developed spaces will be branded in a way that showcases the history and pride points of Suffolk Athletics and the University. The iconic Boston City skyline, the blue-and-gold colors and the traditional Rams mascot all will be part of the fresh look.

Thanks to the leadership generosity of Suffolk alumni Larry and Michael Smith, the University is able to move forward with these renovations that will directly impact the quality of the Athletics Department and the experience of student-athletes, now and in the future.

"The Smiths' legacy at Suffolk reaches far beyond Athletics, but their influence on the University's teams and facilities is dramatic," Director of Athletics Cary McConnell said. "From the renovated hardwood and bleachers in the gymnasium, to the modern fitness center, to the Suffolk bus, to the upcoming renovations, Larry and Michael Smith have led the way through their advocacy and contributions. The University, Athletics Department and the student-athletes are extremely grateful for their continuing friendship and outstanding philanthropy that is making a positive difference at Suffolk every day."
